About the Car
The car was built by Applied Racing Technology in Clearwater, Florida. It is an all tube chrome moly chassis. The body is a fiberglass replica of a ’38 Chevy Roadster, only very Aerodynamic due to the dropped and slanted Pro Mod style front end. The car weighs in at under 2000 pounds with a 540 cu. In. motor, Hughes Pro-Glide, and Strange 9” rear. The car has Strange Struts, Four link with wishbone and anti roll link. 17” wide rear Goodyear pro-stock tires put the power to the ground. Pete’s Dragin’ is one of the fastest Super Gas roadsters in the country and has gone 171.90 mph in 7.97 seconds on an all out pass. The car is now set up to run around 155 mph at the Super Gas index of 9.90 seconds using electronic timers and throttle stops to slow it down. This is so that it can “run the number” without breaking out. The Dragin’ is more than capable of running in the Super Comp class 8.90 index which is mainly comprised of dragsters. The driver-owner Pete Kinney prefers Super Gas because it is the last of the true Hot Rods classes. The driver sits in a normal position on the left side and all of the cars look like they could be street driven. The Super Gas category has a wide variety of very unique cars, T-roadsters, Corvettes, 55-57 Chevy’s, Camaros, Henry J’s, Willy’s, 34-38 Chevy’s, Cobra’s, Pinto’s, Novas, etc.; just to name a few. There is even a Mercedes and a Ferrari racing in Super Gas. This very rare car is the only one of its type and year campaigning on the West Coast in Super Gas.

About the Motor
The engine is a 540 cu. in. Merlin Pro Block based on a Big Block Chevy design. JE 15 _ to 1 compression custom pistons fit into a 4.5” bore. Crower billet 4340 rods mate the pistons to a 4.25” stroker Scat crankshaft. Jesel belt drive is used instead of a standard gear or chain drive. An Aluminum Jeff Johnston DRCE pan and Titan pump are used to hold and flow the racing oil. Sonny’s custom Brodix CNC’d heads and intake are used above with T&D shaft rockers. Huge 2.35” dia. Intakes and 1.95” dia. Exhaust valves are used to maximize flow. The roller camshaft is a Sonny’s custom grind by Competition Cams. A single 1050 Holley Dominator sits on top that’s been reworked by SMI (Sean Murphy Induction). This carburetor is now flowing 1130 CFM. Horsepower is delivered though Jet Hot Coated 2 and 3/8” dia. Exhaust tubes into 5” collectors and Borla mufflers. Ignition is by MSD using a crank trigger and 7-AL box. The motor is making 950+ horsepower on gasoline with no other additives or power boosters. All machining is done by Motor Magic in Bellflower, CA. Pete Kinney assembles his motors with advice from Motor Magic’s Larry Dahlhoff. Transmissions are maintained by Jerry’s Transmission in Norwalk.
